I thought it was time to mention the project I’ve been working on for most of this year since my retirement. It’s a way of combining my interests in design, cycling and social action.
Nether Edge Bikebus runs a social ride each Saturday morning to help less experienced cyclists learn their way around Southwest Sheffield, using safe, unscary routes to get to all the places that you need for work, shopping and the rest of your life. I’m really pleased with the result so far, we have not had a huge number of riders but one or two each week is fine by me as long as they get something out of it. We have a great time, make friends, learn about our city and (of course) enjoy some of the excellent cafes in the area.
There’s a lot of information on the website and blog so I won’t go into detail here, the next big event is the Christmas Shopping Ride which is a circuit of unusual places to buy interesting gifts. Bikebus also aims to support local business and local producers.
As one of the aspects of the project is mapping routes, and we now have four circular routes that together provide “The Knowledge” for cyclists in this area my next idea is a Nether Edge cycling atlas. So watch this space (but not too urgently)
